Epitech Innovation Hub
The Epitech Innovation Hub is an area dedicated to experiments, to prototyping and to the development of innovative projects. They are at once sandboxes and playgrounds brought by the students, mentored projects and boosters of start-ups, an area that is open to all.
All projects with a software component are welcome, whether they come from outside the school or from inside.
The Epitech Innovation Hub is an innovative form of collaboration between students, experts and companies who share and put into practice their competences in the fabrication of innovative technological solutions.
“Bottom-up” and/or “top-down” projects that are worked out by students who have assistance and mentoring at their disposal, or public and private partnerships in search of innovating solutions, the Epitech Innovation Hub is at the crossroads of the needs for each and every one.
Whether it be for students or professionals from the same ecosystem, the Epitech Innovation Hub is at the disposal of all players in the digital world.
It is devised so as to encourage contacts and interactions, generate unity and find the uses of tomorrow together.

THE 5 DOMAINS OF THE EPITECH INNOVATION HUB
The Hub is built on a collaborative and cross-disciplinary methodology, based on 5 competence domains that can stretch across the field of innovation :
The Big Data groups together all the techniques that retrieve, stock, analyse and use large amounts of data so as to create new tools.
Since the start of computing, data were only considered in regard to the relevant software. Today, it is at the centre of all attentions. As it is gathered from the social networks, connected objects, smartphones and other sensors, to not even mention many other sources, data generates new knowledge and therefore creates an evolution of tools and services.
In the Big Data world, we are faced with the following new challenges of data :
- The new uses of data, when it is the source of knowledge with high added value,
- Technologies that enable the management of large volumes of data such as recuperation, storage and visualisation,
- The development of high-tech technologies, whether they are physical or software, to maximise and help the field to advance, since the increase in data is more rapid than the means for calculation and storage.
A number of challenges occupy the time of those students who have joined this domain of the Hub, from scientific research (genetics, astrophysics, biology, etc.) to industry, by way of new uses (health, social networks, video games). In this way they will learn how to understand, master and innovate as much in the putting into place of solutions in Big Data as in other computing domains.
The domain of Virtual Environments of the Hub work around the Interfaces Homme Machine (IHM – Man Machine Interfaces) so as to interact with the virtual world as we do in the physical world.
User immersion via the five senses is the principal target of this still young domain. New tools appear and continue to be invented, allowing us to go further all the time. The Oculus rift, META Glass and soon PrioVR are some examples among many others.
The Virtual Environments use the maximum amount of ergonomical and accessible tools to invent the world of tomorrow, such as the classic keyboard/mouse duo, the increase in reality glasses, or virtual reality headphones via connected objects.
Video games, the world of health or even education are as much opportunities to improve everyday life and invent still more ways to manipulate the virtual world.
- How can we best exploit the tools that exist already ?
- How can we understand and use material innovations ?
On the other hand, when it is a question of bringing the virtual world to the user, the link is obviously with the Embedded domain, in particular with regard to connected objects. Everything that we dispose of in terms of sensors that retrieve environmental data to treat and interpret them can make this an intelligent environment, when it is adapted to the user and does what is expected of it.
This domain concerns problems of security, as much with regard to applications as to the web. There is as much security as there are information and network systems, for example, authentication, access control (biometrics / NFC / smartcards, etc.).
In a context where information and the availability of information have attained a very high value, it is essential to be trained in these security issues, to bring answers and to know the best practices that are linked to them.
One of our objectives is to sensitise vulnerabilities and good practices so as to allow the software to be developed in a robust and stable manner.
Collaborating with the different domains of the Hub also offers the opportunity to think “out of the box” and to have a new vision of computer security that is not limited to intrusion tests or norms: by way of Embedded, computing interferes with everything in our everyday lives (connected objects, intelligent cars, smartphones, viruses and other malware, etc.) which offer new possibilities and problems to resolve.
Our domain is not austere. On the contrary, it is about a vast playground. It suffices to look and see what is happening in the world in terms of intelligence, cyber-security, cyber-defence, and where computing is the key element.
Embedded corresponds to all large and reduced power computer systems, often mobile equipment whose functions are to act on physical systems (sensors, actuators, robots, machines, etc.).
From the automobile to aeronautics, from missiles to TV remote controls, from on-board computers or mobile telephone and tablets, Embedded is a huge domain.
The main problem of this target is the effective and mobile code – even on a mobile telephone – as all unnecessary treatment impacts on the autonomy of the device.
We will be working in this domain on very low power computers with varied architecture, such as AVR (Arduino), ARM (raspberry, OMAP) to cite just a few. We will also put in parallel computing competences with physical sciences (modelling of systems, filtering, servo-control).
Entering Embedded is significant for our students as they will, for the first time, leave pure computing and touch on physical systems, for example, by learning and understanding the functioning of an inertial unit *. The main constraints will be the performance of the code or else the optimisation of weak memory resources and the capacity of available calculations, and parameters that will impact directly on the autonomy of the on-board technologies.
*An inertial unit is a series of sensors that enable the measurement of the orientation, accelerations and rotations of a system (the inertial components).
The Cloud technologies constitute a new paradigm that offers a larger flexibility and great elasticity in putting into place a complete information system.
All the large sectors of economic life have already shown their interest in this. The Cloud revolution has happened, now it is a question of mastering it.
The students will be able to explore this new domain, understand it and learn how to master it from administrative, architectural and development viewpoints.
Their field of experimentation will go from the making of a cloud to its use, which will include the administrative system, the administrative network, the infrastructures to order (IaaS), the platforms to order (PaaS), the running of a private cloud, the use of a public cloud and all the web technologies generally.
They will learn how and why to make the best of migration towards the cloud technologies to obtain the most efficient architecture, while all the time reaping the benefits of all of these technologies.
